New Orleans is famous for many things, including
their cuisine. One absolute must-have when visiting New Orleans is
Café DuMonde’s world-famous beignets. These lighter-than-air French
pastries dusted with powdered sugar are perfect for a midnight
snack or mid-morning pick-me-up, and are best eaten as messily as
possible with a perfect cup of DuMonde’s perfect French market
coffee.
After you have had dessert (always eat it first!) try the freshest
oysters Rockefeller in all the land. Invented at the longest
consecutively owned and operated restaurant in the country,
Antoine’s, these oysters are richer than the family they are named
after!
An item available just about anywhere in New Orleans, but which is
guaranteed to be different each time, is gumbo. With fresh
ingredients that change with the seasons, your taste buds will
never be bored no matter how many times you have it.
Shrimp etouffee is incredible smothered shrimp. For those seafood
lovers who love their seafood rich, this one is a must-have. Other
incredible New Orleans creations include Po Boys in so many
varieties there is something for everyone, muffulettas (salami
sandwich served on an Italian roll and smothered in amazing olive
salad), and red beans and rice. To wash it all down, try a
hurricane, invented by New Orleans’ own Pat O’Brien’s in the 1940s,
or a Sazerac, the state of Louisiana’s official drink.
New Orleans creates world-class chefs, such as Emeril Lagasse, and
is a food paradise for young and old. From high-class dining at
restaurants such as Emeril’s DelMonico Steakhouse to the down-home
cooking of the soul food found in small diners on street corners,
New Orleans is the place your stomach wants to be.
